It’s rare to be published in a peer-reviewed journal as an undergraduate, but that’s exactly what Bruce Rheaume and Scott Mithoefer did.

The duo — both biological science?majors — conducted genomic research on deep-sea bacteria and published their findings in Genome Announcements, a journal of the American Society for Microbiology.

Mithoefer is now working toward his master’s of physician assistant studies at MCPHS University, and Rheaume will begin working towards both an M.D. and Ph.D. in the fall at the University of Connecticut.
