Perinatal Care in China
Using funds from the International Research Opportunities Program, nursing major and honors student Lisa Landry spent nine weeks in Beijing investigating perinatal care.
Many challenges, including a high infant mortality rate, currently face China's healthcare system, and this led Lisa to examine how nurses are addressing these challenges. Through observations of labor and delivery and interviews with new mothers, Lisa also sought to understand the Chinese way of giving birth and concerns facing pregnant Chinese women. One specific aspect she studied was the adherence (or lack thereof) to traditional Chinese medicine practices.
After returning to UNH and presenting her research at the 2006 IROP Symposium, Landry attended the National Conference on Undergraduate Research in April 2007, and her abstract was accepted for a poster presentation at the 18th annual International Research Congress of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. With the support of both the Hamel Center and the Eta Iota chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, she traveled to Vienna, Austria, to attend the conference in July 2007.
