Police Officer

The University Police Department is a well trained professional law enforcement organization. The primary mission of the University of New Hampshire Police Department is the protection of life and property. This is accomplished through fair, consistent and equal enforcement, always keeping in mind the rights and dignity of the public.

The basis of all policy action is the law and the credibility of the agency. The measure of our service will be judged by the public in the way we deliver our service. We will hold all personnel to a high level of ethical practices.

All sworn officers are required to attend the?New Hampshire Police Standards and Training?sixteen week police academy in order to be certified in the State of New Hampshire. If you are a certified police officer in another state, you may only need to attend part of the required sixteen weeks of training.

Entrance Requirements:

  • You must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment
  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED (College Degree desired)
  • Pass a required physical agility test (Takes 1 hour to complete)
  • Pass a written exam (Takes approximately 2 hours to complete)
  • Pass a Oral interview conducted by a panel of field experts (Takes one hour)
  • If you ARE NOT successful you may re-apply for future posted positions

If successful then you will be given a written Conditional Offer of Employment and the following additional tests will be required.

  • Pass an extensive background investigation (Takes up to 60 days to complete)
  • Pass a Polygraph Exam (Takes up to 3 hours to complete)
  • Pass a Psychological Exam (Takes up to 3 hours to complete the written phase and 1 hour with the Doctor)
  • Pass a Medical Physical (Takes up to 1.5 hours to complete with Doctor)
  • Executive interview with the Chief of Police (Takes up to 1 hour)
  • A twenty-Four (24) month training contract is also required which starts the day you are hired.

The entire hiring process can take up to 3 months from time of application through appointment.

If you are the successful candidate you will receive a formal offer of employment and required to complete a one year probationary period.

Once Hired:

Police Academy: You are required to attend and successfully complete a 16 week (12 weeks of which are a mandatory live-in at the Police Academy complex Monday through Friday).

Field Training Program: The department has a 12 week extensive field training program which all new police employees must successfully complete.

Patrol Officers' benefits are covered under a?Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Communications Dispatcher

A Communications Dispatcher is the “first, first responder” on emergency and non-emergency incidents — an essential link between police, fire, emergency medical and the community. The Communications Dispatcher answers 9-1-1, monitors alarms and access control, coordinates efforts with other Departments, and much more. As a Communications Dispatcher you will have the opportunity to help people when they need it most.

The center serves as dispatch for the University of New Hampshire Police Department,?Town of Madbury Police Department, the Towns of?Lee?and?Madbury Fire Departments, the?Barrington Fire Rescue Department, and the?McGregor Memorial EMS.

For full-time employment, applicants must have an associates degree or equivalent combination of education and experience, excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to retain/communication information and perform duties under emergency conditions and prolonged stress.

Campus Service Officer

Campus Service Officers are dedicated to providing a high level and wide range of services to our University community. Each officer attends the mandatory?New Hampshire College and University Campus Security Academy.

Although, UNH campus service officers do not have police authority, they work very closely with University Police Officers. All officers have direct communication with the University Communications Center that provides a connection to Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Units.

University Campus Service Officers are on duty to assist members of the University community. They provide authorized access to University buildings after hours, securing of campus buildings, assisting in room lock-outs as well as building security checks and escorts.
