A first-generation college student from Campton, New Hampshire, Michael Mignanelli '16 entered UNH as a? political science major, with sensible plans to become a lawyer. But once he took Latin, it was classics that captured his heart.?Still, Michael’s path was not really clear until he went to Rome to study at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies and interned in archeology at the American Academy there. "I realized that I never wanted to give up this study,” says Michael. And he won’t.?Next fall, Michael will begin graduate studies in classics at the University of Texas at Austin on a full 6-year scholarship.

Michael’s advice for first-year students? “Get involved in research projects early on. Professors get to know you much better and you get real hands on experience. Who knows, ideas from early research can often spark theses and dissertations.”
