Women studying biotechnology in the UNH Manchester biotechnology innovation center

Women make up nearly half of the U.S. workforce, but only 27% of the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) workforce. Women are vastly underrepresented in STEM—and at UNH Manchester, we’re trying to change that.

Join us on Zoom on November 9 at 5 p.m. for Women in STEM, a panel discussion featuring women alumni working in STEM fields as well as women students pursuing STEM degrees. This virtual event is designed to educate young women about the wealth of academic and career opportunities in STEM—and empower them to pursue them.

The panel includes biological sciences alumna Alicia Finney ’18, computer science and entrepreneurship alumna Maggie O’Brien ’20 and electrical engineering technology alumna Aurora Van De Water ’18.

"I believe that it’s our job as women in technology to always advocate and mentor other women to ensure that we continue to be represented in this growing industry," says O’Brien, who designs and develops automated workflows and custom applications for large manufacturing organizations in the U.S. and Canada as a technical consultant at Arbela Technologies.

Finney, who is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in cellular, molecular and biomedical sciences, says it’s important for young women to be able to see themselves represented in STEM fields.

"As women, if we have any interest in science, we are often pushed towards healthcare to continue to be seen as the caregivers and nurturers. While this is a wonderful and fulfilling career path for many, I knew it wasn’t for me, but saw it for a long time as the only option to integrate my love of biology into a career, Finney said. “It’s by having many mentors along the way who have modeled an alternative path forward that I was able to recognize the potential for my own career as a researcher."

Be inspired by these women and others in the STEM fields at our virtual Women in STEM event on November 9 at 5 p.m.
