The men's soccer program has signed a new member: Exeter High School freshman Lucas Currier, who suffers from?Duchenne?Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and is part of Northeast Passage’s PowerCats.
Currier joined the Wildcats soccer team on Tuesday, just prior to its 2-1 victory over Siena College. He went out onto the field with the team for the playing of the national anthem, was a part of the ceremonial coin toss and cheered his fellow Wildcats from the sidelines with the team.
"We are super excited to announce the signing of Lucas to our team," head coach?Marc Hubbard?said at the signing ceremony. "He loves to play all positions, and we plan on using him wherever the team needs."
In 2007, Currier was diagnosed with DMD, which has confined him to a wheelchair. However, that has not stopped the 15?year old from playing sports. He has been a member of the PowerCats for the last five years, and his competitive spirit has brought him to new levels — traveling to Ohio with the team to take part in a national competition.
When asked how it felt to become a part of the Wildcats soccer team, Currier replied, "Awesome."
He is looking forward to the experience and to hanging out with the players, and he and his mom, Linda, plan on traveling to some road games to cheer on his fellow teammates.
