Brad Kinsey, chair of the mechanical engineering department, has been elected as a Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Fellow for his demonstrated impact on the social, technological and educational aspects of the manufacturing profession.
Kinsey is one of 10 new SME fellows nationwide. Fellows are experienced professionals from industry, research and academia who are at the forefront of manufacturing and have made significant contributions to the field.
“I am humbled by this honor,” says Kinsey.?“SME fellows include several of my colleagues that I respect tremendously for their accomplishments and dedication toward advancing manufacturing in the U.S.”
In addition to his chair and teaching responsibilities, Kinsey serves as director of the UNH Center for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Innovation?(CAMMI) and interim director of the UNH John Olson Advanced Manufacturing Center (JOAMC), which is expected to boost the number of highly skilled professionals in New Hampshire’s advanced manufacturing sector.
Kinsey says advanced manufacturing is a focus of multiple departments at UNH.
“I am just one of the faculty members and staff conducting research and educating our students in advanced manufacturing principles,” says Kinsey. “I look forward to working with many others on initiatives such as the Olson Center.”

The SME fellowship is well deserved, says Chuck Zercher, interim dean of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences.
“Brad has been instrumental in advancing opportunities in manufacturing for our students, faculty members and regional industry partners,” says Zercher. “His leadership with CAMMI and the Olson Center are an important part of UNH helping fill the talent pipeline in the state’s top economic sector — advanced manufacturing.”
Kinsey began his career at UNH in 2001 as assistant professor in mechanical engineering. He was promoted to professor in 2012 and has served as department chair since August 2013. He has co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed journal and conference publications and secured more than $3 million (his share) in grant funding. In addition, Kinsey has mentored more than two dozen graduate students and served on numerous thesis committees.
Other significant honors for Kinsey include a National Science Foundation CAREER Award; the UNH Outstanding Assistant Professor?Award; the Ralph R. Teetor Award from the Society of Automotive Engineers, and a fellowship with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. In 2013, he served as the Department of Energy representative to the Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office, which coordinates the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation.
Kinsey will accept the honor at the SME North American Manufacturing Research Conference in June 2017.
