The?staff and interns at the Sustainability Institute (SI) have been working diligently on several new projects to increase sustainable practices on campus. For the first time, the institute has an impressive cohort of twelve interns from a range of majors, all of whom are serving as peer to peer educators. The interns each specialize in different initiatives to make campus more sustainable.?
As a cohort, the team meets biweekly with Project Director, Jenn Andrews, Peer to Peer Coordinator, Jade Chalkley, and Changemaker Collaborative Program Assistant, Kendall Gray, to discuss project successes and to collaborate when help is needed. Together they have begun developing outreach plans to inform students, staff and faculty of many sustainable practices that can be followed ;on campus.
One project being planned and led by Zero Waste Interns Phoebe Adame, George Anderson, and Chloe Gross is a campus wide Trash?2?Treasure?Pop-up sale to?reduce?clothing waste. The event will take place on?October 21st?at the MUB?and will feature gently used?clothing and?Halloween costumes?that students can purchase for the upcoming holiday.?
The interns are also working on improving UNH’s internal?office?practices?to align with??AASHE’s?Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS)?guidelines?– a transparent, self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance. Sustainability Office Intern Kyana Burgess?is drafting a metrics system to measure how UNH offices?can?limit unnecessary energy use, reduce waste, and?better embody UNH's sustainability?goals. The team aims to engage faculty and staff within their departments?and?motivate?offices?to more?independently contribute to sustainability?best practices?through the?Sustainable Office program.??
Outside the office, Sustainability Advocates Intern Alexis Eaton engages with student representatives from?on-campus?housing?to?improve sustainable practices within residential life.?The?Sustainability?Advocates?plan to do events and outreach throughout the year on sustainable living.??
