Dear Members of the UNH Community,
For the first time in our history, university campuses will be closed Friday, June 18, in recognition of Juneteenth as an official university holiday. Juneteenth is a day of celebration, reflection and ancestral remembrance that officially takes place?June 19, each year. It is also the longest-running African American holiday and marks the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to free enslaved people in Texas who remained in bondage two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. As such, Juneteenth commemorates the official end of slavery. The School of Law library will be creating a display to celebrate Juneteenth. They also will be preparing a library guide with supplemental resources.?
If you are no longer local, there likely will be Juneteenth celebrations held in your respective hometowns. We encourage you to take part in the celebrations. Additional avenues for education are available through Dimond Library and can be found?here.
