Dear Members of the University Community—

I am writing to remind you that I will give the State of the University address Tuesday, Feb. 9, from 12:30 to 2 p.m., with help from several colleagues. We will address how we have responded to COVID, the values we need to uphold given the current political climate, our progress on diversity, equity and inclusion, as well as what we have accomplished on our strategic priorities. We will continue the discussion around racial justice, free speech and civil discord February 19, 2:10-3:30 p.m., when we co-host with the Faculty Senate a convocation to come together and address these issues. Speakers for the convocation are?John Greabe, Law School, “Free Speech at Public Universities;” Jan Golinski, history/COLA, “Post-Truth and Anti-Science;” and Renee Heath, communication/COLA, “Higher Education in a Democracy and the Praxis of Civil Discourse.”?Additional information will follow on the convocation?as well as the launch of a series of additional events on this important topic to include a university wide reading and discussion of P.E. Moskowitz’s book, “The Case Against Free Speech.”
