When we communicate our goal is to reach the most people possible. When communication is inaccessible, we are automatically excluding community members. Approximately 12-18% of the U.S. population has disabilities at any given time, and when communication is inaccessible, we may be unintentionally excluding some individuals from the very start?(ADATA- Understanding Disability Statistics). Reaching all individuals requires us to ensure our communication is accessible.??
Of course, not all methods of communication are equally accessible or effective. For example, creating a social media post might be a great way to get information to the student audience, but many social media platforms lack robust accessibility features. It is important to be thoughtful about the platforms being used and how accessibility can be built in from the start.?
