Allison Leach, a Ph.D. student in the Natural Resources and Earth Systems Science program, was honored for her research on nitrogen footprints.

A paper co-authored by Allison Leach, a doctoral student in UNH’s natural resources and earth systems science program and a research associate in the Sustainability Institute, received the Campus Sustainability Research Award from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) at that organization’s annual meeting recently.

Leach?and her co-authors?were honored for their paper “The Nitrogen Footprint Tool Network: A Multi-Institution Program to Research and Reduce Nitrogen Pollution,” published in the April 2017 issue of Sustainability: The Journal of Record. Leach was a guest editor on that special issue that focused on nitrogen footprints.

“A nitrogen footprint connects our everyday choices such as food, utilities and transit to nitrogen pollution in the environment. Reducing our nitrogen footprint is vital because it can negatively impact not only the environment but also human health, from effects like smog and acid rain to global climate change,” says Leach.

AASHE received 230 entries that resulted in?10 winners?in three categories. Winners were announced during the annual AASHE Conference & Expo in San Antonio, Texas. Entries were judged on overall impact, innovation, stakeholder involvement, clarity and other criteria specific to each category.

“The 2017 award winners demonstrate an inspiring passion for solving some of the world’s most complex challenges. They are truly pioneering the campus sustainability movement,” says AASHE executive director Meghan Fay Zahniser.
