Julie E. Williams, Ph.D. served at the at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) from 2001-2019.? As Senior Vice Provost for Engagement and Faculty Development, she provided collaborative leadership across the University to support engagement with external partners and innovative approaches to faculty development.? Under her leadership an extensive portfolio of faculty development programs was created across the life cycle of faculty, from new faculty orientation, to academic leadership for chairs, that enhanced faculty and ultimately student success at UNH.
Two signature academies, developed under Dr. Williams leadership include the semester long Research and Engagement Academy, designed to increase faculty success in securing extramural funding for research, and the Writing Academy, designed to advance faculty scholarship, writing productivity and engagement. Over three hundred faculty have benefited from these annual academies. The Engaged Scholars Academy (2004 – 2010), first faculty development academy served 85 tenure track, research and extension faculty interested in developing collaborative partnerships with external collaborators which also enhanced external funding success. Dr. Williams supported the work of both individuals and interdisciplinary faculty teams, faculty clusters and faculty-external partner teams.??In addition, the office has designed a number of topic-based faculty learning communities focusing on STEM, the humanities, sustainable ecosystems, for women associate professors and the library.
To enhance the recruitment and retention of a world class faculty to UNH, Dr. Williams lead the launch of the Postdoctoral Diversity and Innovation Scholars Program.? This UNH Program opens a pathway to the professoriate for highly talented, underrepresented postdoctoral scholars through a nationally competitive application process.
Dr. Williams catalyzed the University’s first long term partnership with Howard University, an historically black university.? A memorandum of understanding between the two universities guides this ongoing partnership to enhance capacity in academics, research and cultural exchange. ?She also worked in Washington to enhance the UNH presence at key agencies and sponsors through individual and team visits to federal agencies for faculty. ?
A native Virginian, Dr. Williams received a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Tennessee, was a predoctoral fellow at Yale University, and completed her undergraduate education at the College of William and Mary. She was awarded an American Council on Education (ACE) fellowship served at William and Mary and led the first ACE Fellows convening to three South African universities. Prior to joining UNH, she held faculty and administrative appointments at Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Tennessee, the University of Tennessee Medical Center, and Knoxville College.
