HIV Testing & Prevention

Most people who get HIV get it through anal or vaginal sex, or sharing needles, syringes, or other drug injection equipment.?

The only way to know your HIV status is to get tested. Knowing your status can help you make informed decisions to prevent getting or transmitting HIV.?

Getting Confidential HIV Testing at UNH??

During your appointment, the Health & Wellness clinician will ask you questions about your sexual health history. Some of the questions include:??

  • How many sexual partners you've had;?
  • Which body parts you use when you have sex;?
  • How often you have condomless sex;
  • If you've had an SIT in the past.
  • HIV rapid testing?
    Your test will be processed at Health & Wellness, and you will get your result back in twenty minutes.??

  • HIV lab testing ?
    Your test will be sent out to a lab and you will be notified about your result within 3-5 business days on your MyHealth&Wellness portal or you’ll get a phone call from your clinician.?

Preventing HIV with PrEP at UNH??

PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) can reduce your chances of getting HIV. PrEP is available in pill form at Health & Wellness, by appointment.??

What will happen during your appointment for PrEP??

  • Your clinician will provide you with education and answer any questions you may have about PrEP, HIV, STIs, and sexual health.??
  • You may be tested for HIV (lab test). If you test positive, we’ll connect you with community health providers and resources.??
  • You may be tested for STIs. If you test positive, treatment will be provided.
  • Other tests for viral hepatitis and kidney health will be completed.
  • If PrEP is right for you, we will work with you to get a prescription.
