This program provides grants to colleges and universities to fund individual doctoral students who conduct research in other countries, in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of six to 12 months.

Value:?Average fellowship is approximately $33,000, covering travel expenses, maintenance and dependents allowances depending on cost of living in host country, research expenses, health/accident insurance premiums.
Eligibility:?Institutions of higher education are eligible to apply. Graduate students in doctoral programs in the fields of non-Western European foreign languages and area studies must apply through the institutions in which they are enrolled. Eligible students must be planning a teaching career in the U.S. upon graduation. Students are eligible to receive a fellowship if they are citizens, nationals, or permanent residents of the U.S.
